An appointment has now been made with the following announcement released by the Office of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost.
Western Sydney University is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Kurt Langfeld as the new Dean of the School of Computer, Data, and Mathematical Sciences.
Professor Langfeld joins Western Sydney University from the University of Leeds, where he currently is a Professor in Theoretical Physics and Head of the School of Mathematics.
He brings extensive experience and expertise to Western, having held several significant senior leadership roles in academia. While his primary research area is fundamental particle physics, his work encompasses a wide range of areas, including numerical simulations of quantum field theories and statistical systems. In recent years, he has expanded his research focus to include Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, and Statistical Learning, building on his established connections and exploring opportunities for impactful research.
Professor Kevin Dunn, Provost at Western Sydney University, said the appointment marks an exciting new chapter for the School of Computer, Data, and Mathematical Sciences. “Professor Langfeld’s extensive experience, combined with his forward-thinking approach to research and education, will undoubtedly contribute to the ongoing success and development of the School,” said Professor Dunn.
Professor Langfeld said he looked forward to working closely with students and colleagues in his new role. “I’m thrilled to join the School of Computer, Data and Mathematical Sciences. With a strong focus on impactful research and innovative teaching methods, this school has gained recognition on a global level for its academic excellence. I am excited to be a part of its continued growth and to lead and contribute to this exceptional community,” said Professor Langfeld.
Professor Dunn also extended his sincere appreciation and thanks to Professor Bahman Javadi for his dedicated and steady leadership of the School as Interim Dean.
